Fritz & Matlock
FRITZ & MATLOCK is a gripping new play from the award-winning team behind smash hit OPERATION CRUCIBLE, which transferred to off-Broadway after a successful UK run. Written over Zoom during the pandemic, the show premiered at the Pleasance Islington in October 2021.
Set in a basement of an inner city Sheffield house, two men try and bury the bodies of their past and find their way to a more hopeful future. With no way out, will Fritz make it to his wedding? Will Matlock get away with murder? Or will the police finally raid the house and shut down the marijuana grow in the attic?
A contemporary 'Waiting for Godot,' FRITZ & MATLOCK is a fresh take on men’s mental health and addiction, with surrealist undertones and a comic bite.
Written & performed by James Wallwork and Salvatore D’Aquilla.
First performed at The Pleasance Theatre, Downstairs, October 2021. Funded with generous support by Arts Council England.
Nominated for MOST PROMISING NEW PLAYWRIGHTS and LEAD PERFORMANCES IN A PLAY by the Off-West End Awards.
★★★★★ REVIEWS HUB
“Easily reminiscent of the works of Beckett and Pinter…With principal themes of mental health and toxic friendship, Fritz & Matlock addresses a plethora of philosophical concepts, such as morality, free will, and beauty, while bringing into question the overarching issue of what defines masculinity. In the constant discussion of these elements, the play becomes a successfully candid contemplation of philosophy itself. Together with snappy dialogue, immaculate rhythm, and a strong emotional core, the show easily distinguishes itself as an intricate comedy drama. Fritz & Matlock is exceptional in form, style, and tone, with an effervescent personality and strong focus from start to finish.”
★★★★ THE STAGE
“Intense and occasionally poetic new play exposing toxic male behaviour”
★★★★ NORTH WEST END
“Combining sharp-witted dialogue and situational humour with subtly-crafted production elements, Fritz & Matlock is an endearing attempt to bring out the best (and worst) of the dysfunctional relationships we carry and one’s journey to acknowledge (or better, confront) the writing on the wall”
